All about writing in a shared universe
Where Your Stories Find a Home
Imagine having access to a fully realized post-apocalyptic world—complete with 83 years of established history, complex political factions, detailed settlements, and a rich tapestry of characters whose bloodlines span generations. Now imagine being invited to write your own stories within that world, exploring corners yet unseen and characters yet unborn, while knowing that readers are already invested in the universe you’re contributing to.
This is the collaborative storytelling project that’s redefining how authors approach shared world fiction.
More Than Just Another Post-Apocalyptic Setting
The Age of Fire & Ash isn’t your typical “nuclear war destroyed everything” backdrop. This is a meticulously crafted universe where the collapse of the old world birthed something entirely new. Our founding books feature a landscape of Norse-inspired settlements, Egyptian-influenced kingdoms, democratic trading posts, and nomadic tribes, all struggling against a threat that emerged from the depths of abandoned bunkers. How might your characters evolve in an isolated world filled with danger and uncertainty?
But here’s what makes Fire & Ash special for writers: every element has been designed with expansion in mind.
Why Write in a Shared Universe?
Writing original fiction is hard. World-building from scratch is harder. Creating believable political systems, consistent geography, realistic cultures, and compelling histories that feel authentic? That’s the kind of work that can take years before you even write your first character. Fire & Ash is like a tree with many branches. All interconnected and enhancing the whole.
The Age of Fire & Ash offers you a shortcut—not to quality, but to complexity. Instead of spending months developing your own post-apocalyptic world, you get immediate access to:
- Established political tensions: before, during and after with opportunities to interconnect them.
- Detailed settlement descriptions with unique cultures, belief systems, and governing structures to offer ideas in creating your own locational twist.
- A complex timeline stretching from the original nuclear disaster through multiple generations of survival and adaptation
- Mysterious threats like the Nar creatures that emerge from a genetically modified disease and provide ongoing antagonistic forces
- Character lineages that trace back to the original bunker escapees, local settlements or even nomadic traversing a scarred landscape. Each, offering rich backstory potential
- An existing reader base already invested in the world and hungry for more stories
- Central location for the universe created and kept all in one place to entice the reader while showcasing YOU the author.
- planning database allowing each author to contribute the details of their story for others to note, bringing readers into your story from theirs.
Your Creative Freedom Within Structure
Working within the The Age of Fire & Ash universe doesn’t mean following a rigid formula. The world is vast enough to support stories of every tone, style, and genre:
Romance in the Ruins: Love stories between survivors from different factions, star-crossed romances across political divides, or the intimate moments that sustain hope in a broken world. Imagine a Sunnar warrior falling for a wanderer found in the wastes, or nomads finding love while scavenging the wasteland.
Infected Horror: The Nar aren’t undead zombies—they’re humans twisted by prion disease and genetic modification. Stories exploring the horror of watching loved ones transform, the science behind the infection, or communities learning to identify and contain outbreaks offer rich psychological thriller potential.
Pre-War Political Thrillers: Set your story in the hours, days, or months before the nuclear exchange. Explore the government machinations or spy tales that led to global destruction, the bunker programs, the desperate attempts to prevent catastrophe, or the human stories of those who saw the end coming.
Science Fiction Possibilities: What if some survivors escaped to space stations or lunar colonies? The nuclear fallout eventually ended—what might returning space-faring humans find when they come home decades later? How do they interact with the ground-based societies that evolved in their absence?
Global Perspectives: While the founding stories center on North America, authors can explore how the worldwide nuclear exchange affected every corner of the world. What happened in Australia? How did isolated island nations survive? What new societies emerged in the Amazon, the Sahara, or the Siberian steppes? Your corner of the world becomes part of the larger Age of Fire & Ash tapestry.
Epic Fantasy Elements: While this is speculative fiction, it is not fantasy in that there are no dragons, or faeries in this, but… In our founding books, Norse mythology influences the Sunnar, Egyptian themes guide the Ether, but what other cultural mythologies might have shaped survivor communities? Celtic traditions in the Scottish highlands? Hindu influences in South Asian settlements? Aboriginal dreamtime stories guiding Australian survivors?
Intimate Character Studies: Follow the descendants of the original survivors as they grapple with inherited trauma, explore the psychology of rebuilding civilization, or examine how different generations view the old world and their responsibilities to the future.
The Fire & Ash Brand Promise
Every Fire & Ash universe story carries distinctive branding that immediately signals quality and continuity to readers. When someone picks up a book with the Fire & Ash logo, they know they’re getting:
- Consistent world-building that respects established lore while expanding the universe
- Quality storytelling that meets the standards set by the original series
- Meaningful connections to the larger narrative, even if your story stands alone
- Rich, complex characters who feel authentic to the post-apocalyptic setting
For writers, this branding provides something invaluable: built-in discoverability. Readers who love one Fire & Ash story will actively seek out others, giving your work immediate visibility in a crowded marketplace.
Getting Started: Your Path Into the Universe
Contributing to Fire & Ash begins with understanding the world’s foundational elements, but your creative possibilities are limitless:
The Core Foundation: The founding stories establish a global nuclear disaster, the bunker experiments, and the emergence of North American settlements 83 years later. These events create ripple effects that touch every corner of the globe, but how those ripples manifest in your chosen location is entirely up to you.
Your World, Your Rules: Want to explore how survivors in Tokyo rebuilt using Shinto traditions? Interested in Antarctic research stations that became the foundation for new societies? Curious about how the Amazon rainforest communities adapted? The founding events provide the catalyst, but you create the unique response in your chosen setting.
Timeline Flexibility: Stories can span from the immediate pre-war political tensions or even genetic experimentation that eventually carried over into the bunker; producing the Nar, through the chaotic early survival years, to the current era 83 years later or even further. Some authors might explore the space station colonies mentioned in pre-war documents, others might focus on the underground societies that developed differently than the Raven Rock bunker.
Genre Integration: Your medical thriller about the prion infection outbreaks before the event connects to the horror elements of the founding stories. Your space opera about returning orbital survivors ties into science fiction possibilities. Your political intrigue set in the hours before the bombs dropped provides crucial backstory that enriches all future tales.
Connecting Your Story: While you have complete creative freedom in your chosen corner of the Fire & Ash world, the key events from the founding stories—the nuclear exchange, the bunkers, the emergence of the Nar, the political structures that developed—provide the universal framework that makes your story part of the larger tapestry.
But here’s the key: you don’t need to know everything to get started. Focus on your genre, your location, your characters, and let the founding stories provide the historical context that gives your work deeper resonance. You will work closely with the editorial team to ensure a cohesive connection while protecting the integrity of the whole. No one works in a vacuum here.
Beyond Individual Stories: Building Something Larger
The most exciting aspect of writing in the Fire & Ash universe is the opportunity to contribute to something bigger than any single book or series. Your characters might become part of other writers’ stories. Your settlements could influence future political developments. Your exploration of uncharted territories might become the foundation for entire new story arcs.
This isn’t just publishing—it’s collaborative world-building on an unprecedented scale.
The Future of Collaborative Fiction
Fire & Ash represents a new model for how authors can work together while maintaining their individual creative voices. Instead of competing for readers’ attention in an oversaturated market, participating writers can build an audience together, creating a rising tide that lifts all stories within the universe.
For readers, this means an ever-expanding universe of interconnected stories. For writers, it means access to established world-building, built-in reader interest, marketing cohorts, and the opportunity to be part of a literary community that extends far beyond individual book sales.
